As long as the prospective adoptive parent is married to the parent that has parental rights, we can handle a stepparent adoption so that the spouse can adopt his/her stepchild. This involves a termination of one of the biological or legal parents’ rights. After the stepparent adoption is finalized, the adopting parent’s name will replace the terminated parent’ name on the amended birth certificate. The above applies for both heterosexual couples and same-sex couples, as long as they are married.
